Review Shadow & Ash

Oh my goodness, Shadow & Ash: Bloodbound was such a ride! From the moment I started, I was completely swept away by Timoteu Montroig's incredible storytelling. The blend of historical fiction and fantasy is just masterful. Setting the story in ancient Greece, amidst the backdrop of Sparta's conflicts with Persia, was a brilliant choice. It instantly created this rich, vibrant, and sometimes brutal world that felt both familiar through history and utterly fantastical thanks to the introduction of the vrykolakas.

The romance between Aristion, the centuries-old vrykolakas, and Kallian, the brave Spartan soldier, is the heart of the story, and it's just… breathtaking. It's not your typical insta-love; it's a slow burn, a forbidden connection that develops gradually amidst danger and uncertainty. Their relationship felt real, vulnerable, and intensely passionate. I loved the way the author explored their connection, showcasing both the tender moments of affection and the fiery passion that ignites between them. The forbidden aspect, with Aristion’s hesitancy to embrace a mortal love and the perilous journey of transformation that awaits Kallian, added a layer of suspense and emotional depth that kept me hooked.

But it wasn't just the romance that captivated me. The world-building is superb. Montroig clearly did his research, weaving in authentic details of ancient Greece and Spartan culture. It felt like I was truly transported back in time, experiencing the sights, sounds, and even the harsh realities of that era. The addition of the vrykolakas, these ancient Greek vampires, wasn't just a superficial fantasy element; it was cleverly integrated into the historical narrative, adding a unique supernatural twist that never felt out of place. The fact that they weren't just bloodthirsty monsters but complex beings with their own history and motivations made them all the more compelling.

The action sequences are thrilling and well-described, adding a layer of excitement to the already captivating narrative. The stakes are high throughout the novel, making every chapter a race against time and against powerful enemies. The constant threat of war, coupled with the internal conflicts Aristion and Kallian face, builds intense suspense. I found myself constantly on the edge of my seat, desperate to know what would happen next.

While some readers have mentioned minor editing issues, I personally found those to be insignificant compared to the overall quality of the writing and the powerful story being told. Honestly, the few glitches were easily overlooked considering the immersive experience the book provides. The emotional depth, the compelling characters, and the masterful blend of history and fantasy make Shadow & Ash: Bloodbound a truly unforgettable read. It's a story that will stay with you long after you finish the last page, leaving you yearning for more adventures in this captivating world. I eagerly anticipate future works from Timoteu Montroig. This is definitely a book I will recommend to everyone who appreciates historical fiction, fantasy romance, and LGBTQ+ representation.
